Colleen BeckINSTRUCTORMrs. Beck's teaching career in Southern California started at elementary schools within the Diocese of Orange County, where she taught science and social studies to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. She later shifted to teaching fourth grade for 13 years. In that period, she obtained a master's degree in Education and Curriculum from California State University, Fullerton. Her thesis explored the advantages of incorporating right-brain activities, like writing and vocabulary exercises, into math education to improve learning outcomes.Subsequently, Mrs. Beck decided to tutor students individually, which she found immensely rewarding as it allowed her to help students enhance their understanding and overcome educational challenges. After more than ten years of tutoring and yearning for the classroom community, Mrs. Beck is thrilled to return to teaching, prompting her to join the Orange County Learning Academy. "I am very excited about this new chapter in my teaching career and the opportunities it presents," she stated.

FAQ

  • What is Orange County Learning Academy?

At Orange County Learning Academy (OCLA for short), we operate as a homeschool hybrid. This educational model blends traditional homeschooling with aspects of conventional schooling, offering greater flexibility and personalized learning while maintaining structured socialization opportunities. We are not classified as a public or private school. Our curriculum includes Math, Language Arts, and Science. Classes take place three days a week—Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday—from 9 am to 2:30 pm. OCLA is a 32 week program. There is a separate afterschool program available to OCLA families.

  • Tell me more about the after school program....

This is a fantastic benefit for OCLA families! The OCLA campus holds a separate after-school program available to all local families, ideal for parents with extended work hours. Children can attend school from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM and then join the after-school program from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM without the need for additional transportation. The program runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM, and on Tuesdays from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. An added advantage for an additional low fee of $100 per month for OCLA families. This program is independent of OCLA, although it shares the same location. Children will enjoy making new friends, participating in art projects, arcade games, and sports activities. If you have any further questions about the after-school program, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Do you teach CRT, Sex ed, LGBTQ+ Curriculum?

Every family imparts their unique set of values and beliefs to their children, which is separate from what is taught in OCLA. Should a question arise, we advise the children to seek answers from their parents at home.

  • What does the 3 day program look like?

OCLA operates as a drop-off center on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

  • Is there a family volunteer commitment?

Yes, OCLA requires a family contribution of 48 volunteer hours annually. Families who prefer not to volunteer have the option to compensate for these hours at a rate of $25 per hour, totaling $1,200. Alternatively, families can choose to volunteer for a portion of the hours and pay the remaining balance. This contribution is per family, not per child.

  • My student has an IEP or learning or behavioral challenge. Can OCLA help?

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legal document outlining the specific educational goals and services tailored to meet the individual needs of a student in a public school setting. At OCLA we do not have the resources for most specific needs that are offered in public school through an IEP. We are happy to go over the IEP and discuss if the student would succeed in an environment like OCLA, and this would be on a case-by-case basis. The student would need to be able to cooperatively sit in the classroom and be able to work both in groups and independently.

  • Do you take daily attendance?

We do not hold any attendance records for the students.

  • How do I enroll?

1.) Complete an interest form on the website or contact us via email at .moc.retnecgninraelytnuocegnaro%40olleh2.) Schedule a tour and meet our dedicated staff.3.) Submit an application.4.) Participate in a family interview.5.) Proceed with enrollment!

  • Do you take charter funds?

Yes, we are currently in the process of becoming a vendor with Suncoast Preparatory Academy and Cabrillo Point Academy. Should a family wish for us to apply to become a vendor with another charter, we are open to doing so. For inquiries about enrollment, funding, ordering, and other details, please contact the respective charter directly. We do not have information on the funds provided by each Charter School, as this is not within our tracking scope and it differs from one charter to another. We are willing to accept funds for your classes, provided your charter permits it.

  • Can I visit the campus?

Yes, visits are by appointment only. Please email moc.ymedacagninraelytnuocegnaro%40olleh to arrange a tour!

  • How much teaching/homework should I expect on off days?

Homework is tailored to the grade and level of each student. Educators aim to cover the bulk of teaching in school, with homework serving as reinforcement for the child's benefit. While some Charter Schools mandate paperwork, the objective is to minimize homework. Participation is expected when homework is assigned. Additionally, throughout the school year, certain projects may necessitate components to be completed at home.

  • How much are class fees?

    2024/2025 class fees are as follows:Registration: $300/per child.Class Fees: $6,500/ per child.
